Learning to read and reading to learn includes phonemic awarness, vocabulary development, fluency, comprehension. Reading is taught across subject disciplines so students are able to learn from a variety of texts such as historical documents, graphs, scientific articles, and fiction. Learning to write involves informing, persuading, using evidence, and demonstrating literary power. Students understand the writing process and model traits of writers such as the of use critque to create mulitple drafts. Teachers create a culture of writing by integrating across subject matter and understanding and modeling the writing process.
